It’s been a year… and now even over a year. I am still seeing (and experiencing myself) that no matter what issue we might be dealing with in life (strained your back, death of a loved one, baby won’t sleep?) – it’s made so much worse by the fact that we’re still dealing with a worldwide pandemic. If you haven’t made a conscious effort in the past year to manage your stress well, you are worn out. I have never been more grateful for what I do for a living – I get to put my hands on people, help to relieve stress and tension, and make their life a little easier.
I always recommend making the best of whatever situation you find yourself in. You can’t control the world right now (this year is making us realize that we’re never in control!), but you can control your own actions. Here’s what I want all of my patients to be doing right now.
What are you doing for self-care? Are you making time for the things that make you feel like yourself? Your mental health is important. Maybe that’s taking a walk by yourself, reading a novel, or taking a hot bath. My self-care includes white space (time that I’m not working or parenting and can do whatever I feel like), riding my horse, and reading books.
Take deep, slow breaths, several times a day, anytime you’re feeling tense or stressed.
Connect. Call & text your friends & family. Humans need connection with others!
Look for opportunities. What can you do to help? How can you spread some kindness? Who could you help?
Set boundaries for what media you’re consuming. I recommend you limit your time on Facebook or the news. Literally set a timer on your phone if you need to.
Eat nourishing foods and drink plenty of water. Take the time to make a delicious healthy meal and perhaps leave some on your neighbor’s doorstep.
Get plenty of sleep. Have a relaxing bedtime routine that you follow to allow your body to slow down and rest.
Spend time outside. A little fresh air does wonders. Great for your immune system and mental health.
Exercise. At least get a 20-minute walk every day. So important for your immune system and mental health.
Take your vitamins. Vitamin D, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C are basics for immune building. Ask me if you need specifics.
Is it time for an adjustment, acupuncture, or massage therapy? We are all here to help reduce the stress on your nervous system and help your body function at its best.
Make a list every day of what you’re grateful for.
