Welcome to our new series on “Is it normal…” We want to hear your questions and we’ll answer them in future posts! What are you wondering about? Human bodies are weird!
Is it normal: for my baby to spit up?
Answer: Sometimes! If a baby is gaining weight well, feeding well, and seems happy and not in discomfort, spitting up can be normal. If a baby cries a lot, seems to be in pain frequently, is having trouble feeding, or is not gaining weight well, there are problems that need to be addressed. The baby may have acid reflux.
I assess the whole baby and the family structure when you come into my office. We talk about how feeding, sleeping, pooping, and everything else is going. I use gentle chiropractic care, craniosacral therapy, and nutritional advice with babies to ease symptoms of reflux.
Medical options for infant reflux aren’t great. Zantac continues to be prescribed for babies for reflux, to parents desperate for help for their crying babies, despite it having been recalled due to cancer-causing ingredients. I’m always trying to help avoid the need for medications.
